Official Wedding Ceremony

(Please note that all aspects of this Ceremony can be adapted depending upon the participants’ wishes.) The space should be Sanctified beforehand. Set up an Altar with flowers, candles, and any other items. Altar and Officiant should be in the North, and the participants enter, hand in hand, from the South.

 

Greeting

Dearly beloved, we gather now to celebrate

The most joyous of occasions:

The union of (Name) and (Name) in holy matrimony.

Bear witness as we join them together

To share their love and lives.

The solemn vows these two exchange today

Are meant to last for all time.

As such, this is not a bond to enter into lightly

Or for the wrong reasons.

(Name) and (Name) have been together

For (time), and they are now ready

To take the next step in their relationship.

They come here today, hand in hand,

To declare themselves before their loved ones,

And take each other as partners in life.

 

(Any readings or participants’ own vows, if desired, will be done here.)

 

 

 

 

Vows

I, (Name), do take you, (Name) as my partner,

My companion, my lover, and my friend,

In sickness and health, in good times and bad.

I promise to love, honor, and cherish you,

To keep you in my heart and mind always.

I will treat you with kindness and dignity,

And support you in all that you do,

From this day forth.

 

Ring Exchange

The ring is a symbol of everlasting love,

With no beginning and no end.

May it serve as a reminder of your vows,

And your endless devotion one to the other.

 

Unity Candle Blessing

(Individual tapers are lit.)

Fire is the Element of passion and inspiration.

May your love forever uplift and inspire you,

And the flames of your passion burn eternal.

(Participants light the Unity candle together)

As two come together to become one,

May you share your light and keep it burning

To illuminate your way in the years to come.

 

 

Hand -Wrapping Blessing

(The ribbon or cord is wrapped around the participants’ joined hands.)

Here in the sight of our loved ones,

I bind you together in love and light.

May you take each other’s hand in times of hardship

And in celebration of joy.

May you share your trials and triumphs,

And support each other’s endeavors

Now and always.

 

Pronouncement

And now, by the power vested in me by the Universal Life Church and the State of Oregon, I now pronounce you partners in life.

You may now seal your vows with a kiss.

 

Introduction

Assembled loved ones, I introduce newlyweds (Name) and (Name).

Beware the False Dichotomy

  The appeal of the dichotomy is understandable. It’s psychologically soothing to have two clear options, so we can act accordingly. Unfortunately, life is messy and complicated, and many of the dichotomies we embrace as a society are not only false, they are actively damaging. Consider the false dichotomy of “fight or flight,” of which I’ve written before. If you believe you only have two possible responses to perceived threat of trauma, you won’t realize that freeze, flop, and friend may be more appropriate to the situation. You could end up punching your boss, because running away is for cowards. Even worse, however, are the dichotomies we apply to sex, sexuality, and gender: you’re either gay or straight, male or female.   Topic: Path Doctrine on the Seven Deadly Sins Today’s sermon is about the Christian list of seven “deadly sins” and how they relate to Path teachings.
